THAT VERY SMALL PATH

* * *

Happiness is, perhaps, similar
To poetry:
It is born suddenly, even from nothing.
In my hard life
I have passed through so many wide roads,
But the happiness I have endlessly sought
I found today
Beside this very small path,
Where your hands
Suddenly with such warm devotion
Descended upon my shoulders. . .

-Paruir MIKAELIAN (b. 1924)
translated by Mischa Kudian, 1974
